Correcting your Cyprus VAT return.

Errors happen. Here's what to do. How to correct mistakes on Cyprus VAT returns — voluntary disclosure, penalty mitigation and how to make adjustments without triggering a full audit.

The short answer

Mistakes on a Cyprus VAT return can be corrected, and correcting them yourself before the Tax Department finds them usually keeps penalties lower. This guide covers voluntary disclosure, penalty mitigation and how to make adjustments.

How to make a voluntary disclosure
1
Identify the error
Review your VAT returns for the relevant periods. Calculate the net underpayment or overclaim. Document exactly what went wrong — wrong rate applied, input VAT overclaimed, missed output VAT etc.
2
Calculate the correction
Work out: the period affected, the amount of VAT underpaid or overclaimed, and the interest due (interest is charged on overdue tax from the original due date).
3
Submit disclosure to TASS
Write to the Tax Department (TASS) explaining the error, the periods affected, the amounts involved and how the error occurred. Include your corrected calculations and VAT account.
4
Pay the liability
Pay the underpaid VAT plus interest. TASS will confirm reduced penalties for voluntary disclosure — typically significantly lower than if discovered on audit.

The TASS audit — what triggers it and how to prepare

The Tax and Customs Authority (TASS) selects businesses for VAT audit based on risk indicators including: consistent repayment positions (VAT always in your favour), turnover inconsistencies between VAT returns and income tax returns, high input VAT claims relative to business size, recent registration or sector-specific risk profiles.

If TASS contacts you about a VAT query or audit, respond promptly with full records. Do not destroy documents. If you know errors exist, disclose them proactively before the audit formally begins — voluntary disclosure during an audit enquiry still attracts lower penalties than errors found by the auditor.
